Ukraine promises to take revenge after Russian attacks on the energy sector

The attacks of Russian drones to electrical structures in the north and south of Ukraine at night left almost 60,000 people without electricity from the country and the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has promised to take revenge to order further attacks against Russia.

After three and a half years of war, Russia and Ukraine have intensified aerial attacks in recent weeks. Russia is aimed at Ukraine’s energy and transport systems, while Ukraine has attacked the oil refineries and Russian pipes.

“We will continue with our operations active exactly as necessary for the defense of Ukraine. Forces and resources are prepared. New deep attacks have also been planned,” said Zelenskiy on the social network X after meeting the main general of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrsky.

The largest private energy company of Ukraine, Dtek, said that Russian drones attacked four energy structures in the Odesa region at night and the local authorities reported that 29,000 people were without electricity on Sunday.

The port city of Chornomorsk, outside Odessa, was the most affected, where houses and administrative buildings were also damaged, said Oleh Kiper, governor of the Odessa region.

“The critical infrastructure operates with generators,” said Kiper in the application of Telegram messages. A person was injured in the attack, he said.

The Dtek Energy Company has declared that the emergency repair works will begin as soon as the military give permission.

In the waters near the port of Chornomorsk, a civil rain with the Belize flag suffered slight damage after reaching an unknown explosive device, two sources told Reuters on anonymous conditions.

Chornomorsk is one of the three Ukrainian ports operating in a maritime transport corridor that connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

Drones

The Russian drones also attacked the Chernihiv region in northern Ukraine on Sunday at the beginning, damaging the energy infrastructures and leaving 30,000 houses without electricity, including part of Nizhyn, said the local governor Viacheslav Chaus.

The Ukrainian army said that Russia attacked Ukraine with 142 drones at night and its air defense forces managed to break down most of them, but the drones hit 10 locations.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that its forces reached the Ukrainian port infrastructure which, according to him, was used for military purposes.

Reuters was unable to verify reports independently.

The intensification of fighting in recent weeks occurs when the president of the United States Donald Trump claims to lead an effort to end the war, which began in February 2022, when Moscow invaded Ukrainian.

The Ukrainian army declared on Sunday that, despite the accusations of Moscow of a successful summer offensive, the Russian forces did not obtain full control of any large Ukrainian city and “severely exaggerated” numbers in relation to the captured territories.

The head of the Russian staff, Valery Gerasimov, declared Saturday that from March Russia had captured over 3,500 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine and has taken on the control of 149 villages.

“Despite Gerasimov’s statements, Russian forces did not get full control over any important city,” said the staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in a declaration on social networks.

On Sunday Cremlin said that European powers are interrupting Trump’s efforts of peace and that Russia will continue the operation in Ukraine until Moscow sees real signs that Kiev is ready for peace.
