Sunday’s landslide came after heavy rains and shook a remote village in the mountainous region, leaving only one survivor.
A landslide killed at least a thousand people in the remote Marra mountains in western Sudan, according to the army army group/liberation of the army, which controls the region.
The days followed by strong rains triggered the landslide on Sunday (31/8), which shaken much of the village of Tarasin, leaving only a survivor, said the group in a note.
The movement has made an appeal from UNITED Nations humanitarian aid and other regional and international organizations.
Many residents of the state of Darfur do Norte sought refuge in the region of the mountains of Marra in 2023, after the war between the Sudanese army and the Papilitar Fast Support Forces (RSF) group forced them to leave their homes.
Darfur Governor Minni Minnawi said that the landslide is a “humanitarian tragedy”.
“We appeal to international humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and provide support and assistance in this critical moment, since the tragedy is greater than our people can support alone,” said in a declaration mentioned by the AFP news agency.
The civil war that broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and rapid support forces made the country fall into chaos and caused a serious hunger with accusations of genocide in the Darfur region.
The estimates for the budget of the victims in the civil war vary significantly, but an American authority estimated last year that up to 150,000 people were killed since the beginning of hostilities by 2023. About 12 million fled their homes.
Factions of the Movement/Liberation Army of Sudan, a group that controls the area in which the landslide took place, has promised to fight together with the Sudanese soldiers against the RSF.
Many in Darfur believe that the RSF and allied militias crashed a war with the aim of submitting the region ethnically mixed with the dominion of the Arabs.
