Russian President Vladimir Putin told Kiev on Wednesday that there is the possibility of ending the war in Ukraine through negotiations “if common sense prevails”, an option that he said he preferred but ready to put an end to the war by force if this is the only way.
Speaking of Beijing at the end of a visit that led to an agreement on a new pipeline for China, Putin said he understood “a certain light at the end of the tunnel”, given what he said are sincere efforts from the United States to find a solution to the largest European terrestrial war from the Second World War.
“It seems to me that if common sense prevails, it will be possible to reach an agreement on an acceptable solution to end this conflict. This is my prerequisite,” said Putin to journalists.
“Above all because we can see the will of the current American administration under the command of the president (Donald) Trump, and we see not only his statements, but his sincere desire to find this solution … and I think there is a certain light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s see how the situation develops,” he said.
“Otherwise, we will have to solve all the tasks in view of the force of weapons.”
However, Putin has not shown any desire to soften his long -standing requests, including Kiev to abandon any idea of joining NATO and ending what Moscow says that it is discrimination against Russian speakers.
He said he is willing to keep the talks with Volodymyr Zelenskiy if the Ukrainian president is Moscow, but that any meeting of this type should be well prepared and lead to tangible results.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister discarded Moscow’s suggestion as “unacceptable” as a place for this meeting.
Very distant
Zelenskiy has put pressure on meeting Putin to discuss the terms of a possible agreement, although both parties remain distant. He asked Washington to impose more penalties for Russia if Putin disagrees.
Trump – who tried to mediate a peace agreement – also said that he wants the two leaders to meet and threaten but not yet imposed, secondary penalties for Russia.
Putin, whose economy is showing signs of tension after being hit by global western sanctions, said that he would prefer to finish the war diplomatically, “with peaceful means” if possible.
Russia claims to have attached four Ukrainian regions, a statement according to which Kiev and most Western countries reject themselves as illegal appropriation of land supported by a colonial style war.
