To escape the military dictatorship, he went through exile in Chile before moving to France, where he studied history and cinema. Returning to Brazil, he became a professor at PUC-Rio and founded the producer Caliban, responsible for over 80 documentary titles, mostly historic.

In the 1990s, Tendler He also worked in institutional policy, as secretary of culture and sports of the Federal District, and collaborated with UNESCO in the articulation of audiovisual industry in Mercosur. Throughout his career, he received more than 60 awards at national and international festivals and was awarded by the Federal Government with the Rio Branco Order and, recently, with the Order of Cultural Merit.
