Last chapter in the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, in the ‘Summoning of Evil’ franchise, surprised by becoming an emotional movie
Summoning Evil 4: The Last Ritual premiered in theaters with the promise of ending the family saga Warren and fulfills this function well. However, more than a cycle closure, the feature is a movie ofMichael Chaves (Summoning Evil 3: The Order of the Demon), Director who again shows that he has no full mastery on how to conduct terror truly efficiently.
In this final chapter, we follow the case of Smurl Familywho claimed to live under the torment of supernatural forces in his home. If in previous films the supernatural phenomena served as a backdrop to deepen the relationship of Ed and Lorraine Warren (interpreted by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmigarespectively), here the writers no longer hide: the plot is essentially about the couple and their daughter. Poetic freedom overlaps with the faithful recreation of the real case, and it is confused to identify who is, in fact, the “final demon” of history.
The terror of Keys The same formula follows: everything that works comes from elements already explored by James Wan In the first feature films, such as the chaotic sequence that accompanies the family or the patient camera that assumes the entity’s point of view. When you need to create tension, the director uses shrill sounds and dark environments, resulting in predictable scares miles away. It is a shame.
Still, it is curious to note that even without reinventing the genre, the movie gets an unexpectedly affectionate mood. This is because the focus on Warren Family It is not only translated into investigations or clashes with the supernatural, but also on small everyday and affectionate moments.
There are birthdays, intimate conversations and a different atmosphere in photography and soundtrack, which in many excerpts moves away from the tension of horror to create something more welcoming. This choice, even risky, gives the feature an air of bittersweet farewell and sometimes even cute.
This approach does not completely bring down the movie and, curiously, makes it even fun. INVOCATION OF EVIL 4 does not reinvent the wheel or offer great reflections, but can please fans who want to say goodbye to Warrens in a narrative more centered on its family dynamics than in terror itself.
