Columbo: How does it end?

Warning, spoilers. The following article will reveal the main plot elements of “Columbo” as well as its ending.

We do not have a cult of Columbus. Starring the charismatic Peter Falk, the 13-Emmy-winning series has been on the air for 21 years, as a lieutenant in a notorious Los Angeles crime ring for years, short in stature but big in spirit, a sincere-looking but peerless investigator. , it offered many fascinating investigations… the culprit of which is always revealed at the beginning of the episode! Indeed, in Columbo we know the killer, and we just have to watch the ever-surprising way in which an expert detective manages to unmask the culprit.

And it was on January 30, 2003, when his last investigation was broadcast with the last episode called “Columbo Leads the Dance”. What is happening here? We tell you.

Justin Price (Matthew Rhys) is about to open his new club, The Bait. He must also get financial help from Tony Galper (Carmine Giovinazzo), a gangster and the son of a notorious East Coast mobster, who has arrived in Los Angeles to close the deal.

Tony then visits Vanessa Farrows (Jennifer Skye), an unwelcome visit from a young woman who is actually his ex-wife. The latter comes across a photo of Vanessa’s new boyfriend Justin Price and becomes angry and vents his anger on Vanessa. In self-defense, he pulls Tony away, who falls to his death on the coffee table.

Vanessa then calls Justin for help and the couple agree that the police should not be called because of the victim’s relationship and the large amount of funding that will be transferred. Thus, he retrieves the electronic card from Tony’s hotel room, removes the latter’s body, and then goes to the hotel to use the card and create the illusion that he is still alive.

However, the situation becomes more complicated: the events were secretly filmed by Linwood Coben (Douglas Roberts), a tabloid photographer, who calls Vanessa to tell her that he knows everything and emails Justin the evidence. He offers the latter the negatives and prints for $250,000: Justin agrees to pay.

Two men meet on the same evening. However, Justin plans to kill the photographer and make his death look like suicide. He executes his plan: he strangles her, puts a noose around her neck, connects her to a radiator, removes the photographic film and types a fake suicide note into her computer. However, he will suddenly come to his senses. Justin then pushes her, and as she falls, Linwood goes through the window and into the alley below.

Columbo is apparently called to the scene of the crime. The problem is, when the latter investigates the “suicide”, he notices that Linwood recently used mouthwash and left a piece of his fingernail in the toilet. For him, this is more like the attitude of a man who is “preparing for a woman rather than committing suicide.”

Also, the technician discovers that the victim’s computer keyboard is missing fingerprints (due to the gloves) and that a page of Linwood’s calendar has been torn out. Columbo finds it odd that someone would bother to remove the current page from their calendar before jumping out the window. He’s convinced he wants someone to believe it’s a suicide, and it turns out that digging into the handwriting reveals an address: the address of a club, where he immediately goes and Justin asks.

The detective finally realizes that in order to solve the Linwood murder, he must also solve the mystery surrounding Tony Galper, as he discovers that the East Coast mobster Tony belonged to has sent a representative to Los Angeles. – Representative (Tony) who disappeared after borrowing a surprising amount of money.

During the investigation, Justin tells Columbo about Linwood’s fiery attitude in hopes of misleading the lieutenant. Later, the detective stumbles upon a voice message intended for the photographer: he owes money to a man whom Columbo immediately visits. There, he learns that the paparazzi were using this man’s garden to spy on Vanessa (this is how he witnessed Tony’s death). Then he reads it.

Finally, Columbo notices that one of the aquariums on the dance floor of Justin’s club has fewer fish and is smaller than the others. Indeed, Justin made the mistake of hiding the body under one of the tanks he was about to install, forcing him to install a smaller one. Thus, this inconsistency did not escape Columbus, who receives a warrant to confirm his suspicions. Using radar, Tony’s body is found and revelations follow.

One more thing… In the final moments of the episode, Columbo mentions that “Tony slept with the fish,” an homage to the Godfather film series. Justin and Vanessa were eventually arrested for covering up Tony Galper’s murder. Columbo then leaves the club satisfied. And that’s the end of the series.
