“The Atomic Refuge”: Netflix bets on a new series of creators of “La Casa De Papel”

The Spanish series “The Atomic Refuge” – “El Refugio Atomic”, in the original debut – on September 19, 2025 in Netflix surrounded by expectations.

With eight episodes, the creation is by Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, head of the success “La Casa De Papel”, and promises a dramatic intensity and a strong load of suspense.

The production reiterates the duo talent to create closed universes and narratives full of tension and strong characters. They were also behind “Sky Rojo” and “Berlin”.

The plot of the new series portrays the world in front of an imminent collapse, with the risk of a third world war.

Given this photo, a group of billionaires is looking for a refuge in Kimera Underground Park – an underground luxury bunker.

Equipped with high -tech gym, Spa, a sophisticated restaurant, scenographic basketball court, Zen garden, cocktail bar and even an office of psychology, the refuge is a microcosm that simulates extreme privileges and isolates its inhabitants of the world catastrophe.

However, isolation forces coexistence that brings out old unresolved feuds, making room for unexpected secrets and alliances.

The series presents a robust cast, with prominent names of Spanish cinema and TV like Milen Ibarguren – in the photo – Joaquin Furriel, Natalia Verbeke and Carlos Santos.

In addition, production has a special participation of Enrique Arce, known by “La Casa De Papel”.

The direction of the new Netflix series is by Jesús Colmenar, David Barrocal and José Manuel Cradioto.

The recordings began in February 2024, in an underground scenario built with over 8,000 m² at the Hive Viejo Studios in Madrid, the capital of Spain.

The set was designed with rich details, recreating a claustrophobic and hyperluxurio environment. External filming was also made in the area of ​​La Barrosa in April 2024.

Netflix Marketing included the launch of a teaser in May 2025 and the official trailer on May 28th.

They anticipated the debut with scenes that stimulate thought and an engaging atmosphere reminiscent of dystopian universes and psychological competitions.

The series comes as another collaboration between Netflix and Vancouver Media, manufacturer of Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato.
