Alepe approves the creation of the parliamentary front for the rights of the LGBTQIAPN+ population

The initiative was proposed by the deputy state road João Paulo (PT).

The Legislative Assembly of Pernambuco approved, on Tuesday 9 September, the creation of the parliamentary front for the rights of the LGBTQIAPN+population, an initiative proposed by the state representative João Paulo (PT).

The proposal was born from a historical question of social movements and representative entities of the LGBTQIAPN state+ population and marks unprecedented progress within the pernambuco legislature.

According to João Paulo, the parliamentary front will be a space for the monitoring and supervision of public policies, the articulation with government agencies and civil society, as well as the proposal for legislation aimed at equality and full citizenship.

The parliamentarian also highlighted the symbolic and educational character of the front, which aims to promote debates, campaigns against disinformation and cultural initiatives in favor of respect for diversity.

“This parliamentary front will be a space of hope. It will be the demonstration that this house is next to democracy, diversity and human rights,” said João Paulo.

“Above all, it is an answer to the cry of entity and social movements that have built this fight against pernambuco.”

During the session, in which the project was voted, there were several leaders of the LGBTQIAPN+ movement that supported the proposal, including Rivânia Rodrigues, PT LGBTQIAPN+ secretary; Ruffino Gilvan; Rildo Veras, from the entity of northern Lees; Marcone Costa; Maria del Cielo, from the Metropolis nightclub; And Chopely, from the NGO Love Trans.

The parliamentarian underlined the gravity of the scenario of violence against the LGBTQIAPN+ population throughout the national territory.

Brazil follows among the most violent countries in the world against LGBTQIAPN+people. Pernambuco is among the eight states with the highest hatred crimes rates and, in 2024, it was the seventh state with the largest number of murders of trans people, according to the national association of transvestites and transsexuals (Antra).

For deputy João Paulo, these data demonstrate the urgency of the measure.

“We can no longer live with temporary policies that change with every management. We need permanent tools to face violence and promote full citizenship,” he said.

The front will have the function of supervising public policies, of proposing legislation, joining actions with government agencies and civil society and also to play a symbolic and educational role, promoting debates and campaigns against disinformation and prejudice.

“We cannot live with this reality in the 21st century. We cannot naturalize violence, exclusion, prejudice and marginalization”, warned João Paulo.

The parliamentary front is already organized to keep its first meeting, which will aim to discuss concrete proposals to cope with violence, promoting citizenship and guaranteeing rights for the LGBTQIAPN+ population to pernambuco.
