The exhibition inaugurated this Tuesday 9 Pioneers and entrepreneurs: the development saga in Brazil In University of San Paolo (USP) It occupies the room of the library of the Faculty of Economics, Administration, Accounting and Appearatory.
The show will remain open to the visit until June 26, 2026 to highlight the “challenges addressed and overcome the strategies in uncertain scenarios”, through Brazilian history from 1890 to current times and showing the influence of the personalities who “remain alive to date”, according to Jacques Marcovitch, creator and coordinator of the project.
“This exhibition begins in the classroom when we realize the lack of Brazilian cases of pioneering companies,” says the curator, who is also an emeritus teacher at Fea-USP and was a USP rector between 1997 and 2001.
Among those honored in the exhibition is Julio Mesquita, who, in 1885, was hired as an editor in The province of San Paolo, Newspaper name The state of St. Paul. In 1902, Julio Mesquita became the owner of the company that the family controls to date, when the newspaper performs 150.
“Julio Mesquita and his heirs were witnesses and characters of all the decisive episodes of national politics. They were the origin of decisive cultural initiatives, starting from the creation of the University of San Paolo”, describes Marcovitch.
The creation of University of San PaoloIn 1934, it was idealized by Julio de Mesquita Filho. “We have over 90 years of USP and this is the beginning of a long way for a university that has done a lot, but still has a lot to do,” says Marcovitch.
The Fea-USP show brings together audiovisual, digital and scenographic resources and tries to encourage teachers and students to explore, search and teach on the origin and evolution of companies with a long trajectory in Brazil. In addition to the itinerant exhibition, two pioneering courses and entrepreneurial education for teachers from all regions of the country have been taught. The next course will be offered in 2026.
The project began in 2001 with a national survey that served as a basis for the book trilogy Pioneers and entrepreneurs: the development saga in Brazilalso by Marcovitch. The books tell the stories of the entrepreneurs responsible for the foundation and the development of some of the main groups of Brazilian companies.

In the first volume, the trajectories of businessmen who were part of the history of San Paolo are presented: Prado, Nami Jafet, Francisco Matarazzo, Ramos de Azevedo, Jorge Street, Roberto Simonen, Julio Mesquita and Leon Faffer.
The work has two other volumes that focus on the trajectory of the pioneering entrepreneurs from other Brazilian states, completing the 24 fees on display.
“Each of them has left a legacy in companies, many of which centuries, and these are these institutions that we have revealed today in this project,” says the curator.

They have been used as a criterion for the choice of exceptional entrepreneurs of the project not only the economic success achieved, but also characteristics such as future vision, strategic sensitivity and the ability of innovation. “It was also opted for those who presented surprising singularity and, in a certain sense, representative of some types of entrepreneur,” says the curative of the project.
Added eight pioneering female figures for Brazilian history: the entrepreneur Ermelinda Queiroz, pacifist India Vanuíre, the religious sister Dulce, the mother of Ialarixá Aninha, the psychiatrist Nise da Silveira, gives Veridiana, Professor Waldisa Russio and pain pain. “Important not only for their postures or actions in life, the women chosen for this exhibition are here for their representativeness,” says the curator.
