One of the most listed to represent Brazil at the ceremony of next year is “The secret agent”, by Kleber Mendonça Filho. The work was acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, where he won the best critical film and the best actor for Wagner Moura. Set in 1977, during the military dictatorship, the film accompanies Marcelo, a technology teacher who tries to start his life in Recife, but ends up in a universe of espionage and paranoia.

Another strong candidate is “The Last Blue”, winner of the critical prize in Berlin this year. The film proposes a dystopian allegory on authoritarian regimes, without situating the narrative in a specific moment. In the plot, the elderly are condemned to isolation, while history reveals an environment of oppression and resistance.

Stories of social denunciation also contest Brazilian nomination. The director Mariana Brennand competes with “Manas”, inspired by cases of childhood exploitation on the island of Marajó, pará. Also broadcast in Cannes, the film was assigned for its social importance. It accompanies Tielle (Jamilli Corrêa), a 13 -year -old girl who lives with her family in passions, facing poverty and vulnerability.

Inspired by true stories, he plays his life in Chatuba, Mesquita, in Baixada Fluminense. The film follows three teenagers: Dé, Adrianim and Martins and the emotional relationship of Dé with his grandmother gives Almerinda (Teca Pereira), who faces Alzheimer’s evil.

Another competitor is “Baby”, by Marcelo Caetano, set in San Paolo. The film, shown in a parallel show in 2024, earned Ricardo Teodoro the prize for the best actor. The plot faces young people, masculinity and social criticism in urban scenarios.

The closure of the list is “West Again” by Érico Rassi, a western Sermanjo set inside Goiás. The film plays rude and fragile men in conflict, with violent rivalry that refer to the tradition of Brazilian films, but with an accent and Brazilian identity. The information comes from Brazilian agency.
