In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Lula declares that the time to abandon fossil fuels has not arrived and that “we must see the need for each country”.
President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva declared Wednesday (17/9) in an interview with BBC News Brasil that the time to abandon the exploration of fossil fuels such as oil “has not arrived”.
“I want to know which country of the planet is ready to have an energy transition capable of abdicating the fossil fuel,” Lula said when he was asked of the Brazilian government and the Petrobras project to propose oil on the equatorial margin thus called, at the mouth of the Amazon River, in the deep waters of Amapá.
The president claims to be “totally favorable” to the energy transition that leads the world to no longer need fossil fuels, but “one must know what the need for each country is”.
The International Energy Agency (AIE) states that to achieve the objective of carbon neutrality by 2050, immediate renunciation is necessary to approve new oil and gas projects. This global objective is underlined as essential to limit the heating of the planet.
The Petrobras project, whose prevention plan has already been approved by Ibama, aims to pierce an exploratory well in the region of the equatorial margin, 500 km from the mouth of the Amazon River and over 160 km from the Amapa Costa.
The license process, however, has not yet been completed, pending conclusions and analysis of the tests that simulate, for example, how the oil company would have responded in the event of an emergency.
Petrobras claims that “the confirmation of the existence of oil in the equatorial margin can open an important energy border for the country”, contributing to the “energy transition process that occurs fair, safe and sustainable”.
Lula told the BBC News Brasil that the government and Petrobras are “fulfilling all the penalties of the law so that they can do the search and know if there is oil”.
“If we have a problem, we will be responsible for dealing with this problem,” said the president, claiming that Petrobras has “a better prospecting technology of Wate Deep -Wate” and “has never had an accident”.
The oil exploration at the mouth of Amazonas, however, even put the members of the government in disagreement.
Environmentalists are positioned against the initiative led by Petrobras and the Ministry of Miniers and Energy by claiming that the environmental risks are high for a region so ecologically sensitive and close to the Amazon in case of loss.
They also argue that in the middle of the climatic emergency caused largely by the emissions generated by fossil fuels, the opening of new areas of oil exploration would be harmful to the global climate.
The Minister of the Environment Marina Silva has already manifested itself against the oil exploration in the region, but stated that the decision on the subject will be technical and not political.
Cop: “I want the world to know the Amazon”

Lula was also questioned by the BBC News Brasil if his commitment to release the oil perspective on the equatorial margin cannot compromise his “climatic leadership” in front of the Cop30 in BelĂ©m (PA) in November.
In addition to defending the importance of the project, the President claimed that Brazil already has almost 90% of the clean electric matrix, with the potential to explore even more energy for wind, solar and biomass.
“We are doing the biggest revolution in the energy transition that a country is making.”
Lula also defended the detention of the policeman in BelĂ©m, a city that faced a crisis linked to the high prices accused for the accommodation. Representatives of 25 countries have even put pressure on Lula’s government to obtain Cop30 from the capital of Pará.
In Wednesday’s interview, the president promised to carry out the best policeman ever made.
“The policeman was chosen to be made in Amazon because I want the world, instead of talking about the Amazon, they know the Amazon.”
“I want people who are worried about forests come to know the forest. It is very easy to create a policeman in Paris, Dubai,” said Lula.
