The Pope highlights the hunger for justice of peoples in unacceptable conditions

Leo XIV held the speech to São Pedro Square during the Jubilee

Pope Leo XIV appealed this Saturday (20) for a reflection on “the many countries and peoples who are hungry and thirst for justice, because their living conditions are so unjust and inhuman that they are unacceptable”.

The declaration was given by the pontiff in his speech to San Pedro Square, in the Vatican, before thousands of pilgrims who participate in the Jubilee of Justice.

The religious have asked for a reflection “on an aspect of justice that is often not sufficiently faced: the reality of so many countries and peoples who are hungry and thirst for justice, because their living conditions are so unjust and inhuman that are unacceptable”.

Citing Sant’Agostino, Robert Prevost said that “it is impossible to have rights in a state in which there is no real justice”. According to him, “these always valid decisions should therefore be applied to the current international scenario”.

“The demanding words of Sant’Agostino inspire all of us to always give us the best of us in the exercise of justice at the service of people, with our eyes fixed on God, in order to fully respect the justice, the right and dignity of people,” he said.

In his speech, the Pope also underlined the importance of justice “in the face of the various conflicts that may derive from individual action or loss of common sense that can also influence institutions and structures”.

In addition, he underlined that “justice becomes concrete when it is directed to others, when each person receives what they deserve, until the equality of dignity and opportunities between human beings is achieved”.

He then complained “that there is a growing discrimination, whose first effect is precisely the lack of access to justice”.

“True equality, on the other hand, is the possibility of everyone to carry out their aspirations and guarantee the rights inherent to their dignity, supported by a system of common and shared values, capable of inspiring rules and laws that support the functioning of the institutions,” he said.

Therefore, he asked all those involved in the judicial system of “seeking or recovering the forgotten values in life, to take care of them and respect them”.
