The United States government decided to cancel the annual polls from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) which aimed to control the data on the food security of the population.
Conducted since the mid -90s, the investigation had occurred in all states and demographic groups and was used by state, state and local policies formulators to make financing decisions for food assistance programs and to evaluate their effectiveness.
The decision to stop the survey this year was announced to employees who collected data last week and confirmed this Saturday, 20 from Usda. “This report became excessively politicized and, after the subsequent review, was considered useless to carry out the department’s work,” said Alec Varsamis’ spokesman, adding that the 2024 report will be launched on October 22nd.
“In the last 30 years, the food insecurity of the USDA has provided information on the extent that US families have managed to cover their food needs,” said Colleen Heflin, professor at the University of Syracuse, who studied data from the beginning.
“Not having this measure until 2025 is particularly worrying, given the current increase in inflation and the deterioration of the conditions of the labor market, two conditions known to increase food insecurity,” added the teacher.
Food research was included as an addendum to monthly statistics relating to the labor market, income and poverty. In addition, it was an official source of the government measuring how many Americans have – or not having enough food.
