Classic based on Graciliano Ramos’s work is remembered by the director of I’m still here as one of the most impactful films of his life
The filmmaker Walter Sallesresponsible for striking titles as Central do Brasil and I’m still herehighlighted a Brazilian work among his essential films. In an interview with Letterboxd, he elected Dry lives (1963), from Nelson Pereira dos Santosas one of the works that most impacted him.
Based on the classic of the same name of Graciliano Ramosthe feature portrays the hard trajectory of a northeastern family facing drought and misery in search of survival. For Salles, the strength of the film is precisely in its sobriety and narrative accuracy.
“It’s an extraordinary adaptation. There is no more plan, each choice is incredibly accurate and moving,” said the filmmaker.
Salles He also stressed how the work is still current, both for the social portrait and for the cinematic language. “It’s a contained but devastating movie that continues to play deeply who watches it”completed.
