Amazon in the cinema: between charm and clichés

For decades, Amazon has contributed to the imagination of the seventh art. Like Aguirre, God’s madness or Werner Duke will make Fitzkaraldo’s anger as a character of the forest, mysterious and impressive. Recently, feature films, such as Lost City of James Gray, continue this vision of the study area with spectacular landscapes. These representations often emphasize spectacular and adventure, turning Amazon into an exotic scenery.

Other works, such as the Embrace of Ciro Guerra Snake, have received a different look, giving the central place the Amazon Aboriginal people and their vision of the world. This approach opens up to a more authentic and nuanced representation. Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac Museum, “Amazônia. Aboriginal Creatures and Future” is part of this approach: it puts the sounds of Amazon Aboriginal themes in the middle of the story, causing viewers to discover the alive Amazon and far from the western clichés.

Exhibition like a living story

Anthropologist Leandro Varison and militia artist Danilson Baniva, an exhibition that was distinguished by September 30, 2026, Quai Branly – in the Jacques Chirac Museum – is located as a film in several actions. The visitor crosses the world of narration that reflects the visions of the world of Aboriginal Amazon peoples: creating the world, producing people, relationships with other creatures and the prospects of the future.

Body pictures, traditional knowledge, drawings, sound installations, and modern creatures follow each other as so many sequences of collective frescoes. Amazon myths appear as circular and evolutionary accounts, where each generation adds their voice, offering guests a vigorous experience near a certain cinematic performance focused.

Amazonic face: Museum of indigenous cinema

Simultaneously, “Amazônia. Creatures and Future Aboriginal People” continue words through cinema. The exhibition echoes the cinema, which is still unknown in Europe by indigenous directors who apply their connection to the forest, souls and rituals, which offers the interior of Amazon. It is in this dynamics that the museum program is part of the museum, with the cycle of “Discovering Amazonic Cinema” (from November 13, 2025), designed by filmmaker Takum Quicko, which unites five indigenous films, documentary films and fantasy.

The festival is performed by the young society “Forests and Wonders” (from October 18 to October 26, 2025) by studying the imagination of the forests in the cinema, from Hayao Miaazak to Jean-François Laguyon. A great way to continue the experience of the exhibition even in the dark rooms!

Modern and energetic, Exhibition “Amazônia. Creatures and Future Aboriginals” should be found from September 30, 2025 to January 18, 2026, at Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac Museum.
