The Federal Federal Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) accused by the government of San Paolo, Tuesday 30 September, the urgent dissemination of the names of bars, restaurants, cellars and other exchanges that have sold adult alcohol with methanol. The request was submitted by means of a letter sent to the Secretary of State of Public Security, Guilherme Derritite.
In the last few days, the state has faced a wave of serious cases of intoxication. Dozens of people have been hospitalized and at least five deaths have been confirmed. Given the severity of the situation, Boulos claims that the population must be clearly informed on where these products were found so that they can avoid further risks.
In the document, the parliamentarian says that it is not just about punishing the managers, but of protecting public health. He believes that transparency is essential right now and that hiding this information endangers more people.
Boulos also criticized the way the state government faced the case. According to him, it is not enough to appear in collective interviews that announce isolated operations. It is necessary to act firmly and adopt larger measurements that really face the root problem.
“The population must know exactly which plants have been captured by selling contaminated drinks. It is not possible to treat a crisis of this gravity with superficial measures,” said the deputy.
For Boulos, the government’s response must go beyond the speech and become real measures that guarantee the safety of those who consume these products. In the meantime, the concern grows between traders, customers and relatives of the victims.
Deaths caused by adulterated drinks
In the last few days, at least three people have died from methanol poisoning in the city of San Paolo and São Bernardo do Campo, in the metropolitan region. Another 10 cases are designed for possible contamination by the same substance, according to the information of the health surveillance center of the State of San Paolo (CVS).
The main suspicion is that the contamination is linked to the adulteration of alcoholic beverages such as gin, whiskey and vodka sold in bars and cellars. But after all, what is methanol and what effects can it have on the body?
The substance, also known as the methyl alcohol, is a highly flammable biocarbush. It can be produced by different processes, such as the destructive distillation of the wood, the use of sugar cane or fossil gases.
According to Alvaro Pulchinelli Junior, toxicologist, clinical pathologist and president of the Brazilian society of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine (SBPC/ml), the substance is widely used in the chemical industry, acting as a solvent, in the production of paints and varines and refinancing processes.
