To Rolling Stone Brazil, singer details how punk became his liberation and the secret of “Brazilian way” in the lyrics in English
When you think of punk, what are the main ideas that come to your mind? Right away, for many, come dirt, rudeness, spiked hair, metal thorns and other more caricatured thoughts. Created in the 1970s as a counterculture movement, it was a reaction to the philosophy of non-violence of hippies and cultural elitism, and because of all this, this stereotype was quickly consolidated. And so it was a long time, but nowadays the reality is different, at least to Karen Dio34 -year -old punk.
Santos’s natural singer of approximately 1.60m still keeps chains and tattoos, but with her friendly and charismatic way – you would hardly say she is one of punk’s promises in Brazil. It is proof that the genre has changed and transcended the music. Karen It is one of the few who made his name in the punk movement and became a prominence. In Brazil, not yet – perhaps because of the little visibility that the genre has – but in Europe, his face is already known and so was chosen to open the show of Avenged Sevenfoldwhich would happen in October this year, but was postponed to 2026 due to the vocal fold bruising of the vocalist M. Shadows.
She returned to her homeland anyway, has a solo presentation scheduled for next Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Casa Rockambole, and Rolling Stone Brazil He talked to the artist. Right away came to mind: How did you become interested in the genre?
“What caught my attention most [no punk] It was the fact that you could be who you are. Have freedom and attitude, you know? Musically speaking, the fact that it is fast, very energetic and upwards caught my attention. That’s when it gave a total match. ”
Although Karen already orbited around the sound of bands like Offspringit was the image and attitude of Avril Lavigne that lit the definitive spark. It was with the Canadian singer that she decided to be a “band girl” and, still in Santos, spent years composing, writing music and jumping from band in band. As she herself sums up: “Living with the fights and egos of the groups.” After some frustrations, he decided that he would not be part of a band and would focus on his solo career.
She was wrong …
To have more visibility, he moved to the state capital and, during an exchange of messages, painted the opportunity to set up once again a band.
“Caraca, I spent my whole life doing band, when I start doing my solo career, I get the suggestion of doing band. ‘I’m full of thing, oh, I don’t know, I’ll think.’ Then I stopped a while and asked my walking friend.”
Little did she know that the letters already had their future prepared…
“I need a divine sign or something like that. Come on, what are these stars talking about?” The stars indicated that it would be good to give an ultimatum to the band idea and was then created Violet soda. It was there that things started and where she learned a lot:
“What I learned a lot was DIY [Do It Yourself, ou Faça Você Mesmo em tradução livre]. I made the covers, organized shows and made the roll happen. ”
The project lasted. The group released several singles, hits with over 500,000 reproductions on streaming platforms, EPS and a self -titled album in 2019, until the same problems as always reappeared and the band decided to separate. Little did she know that the letters did not point to the formation of a band, but a new person in her life.
“I am very grateful to Violetbecause if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am, not even met Matt [Matthew Bigland]my husband”.
It was during one of the shows that they met and soon started a relationship. They went through few and good in the pandemic, which showed “that the relationship was real.” Due to a medical condition of Matt, Karen He decided to move to England and live with him.
From the bottom of the well to the stage
“In fact, I even thought of giving up making music. It was very difficult to start over again, I’ve had several bands, none exploded and start from scratch in a new country, which I don’t know anyone … It’s complicated.”
It really was, but if she had the stars’ endorsement, it was supposed to work. It was her husband who brought the mood back. Together they composed again and soon they did “Sick RideIn 2023, your most heard music on streamings.
Things were happening, another single, an EP in 2024 and several other projects in 2025. And then we arrived today. In the middle, Karen signed with Hopeless Recordseven seal of Avenged Sevenfoldand played in Download Festivalone of the main rock festivals of the United Kingdom. What is it like to know that you are on the right track, Karen?
“At the same time I’m going on the right track, you can see that it has ground, this is the only frustrating part.”
Despite the not -so -optimistic answer, she acknowledges that she has already done the hardest part: being a Brazilian who has been able to have a relative success abroad. And the doubt arises: Have you ever suffered any prejudice for being a Brazilian singing in English?
“No, I didn’t suffer. I was very afraid when I moved to England to make music, because then I knew I was going to be competing with people who really speak English and I don’t say. But writing music, I saw that, in fact, I’m Brazilian, I’m different from everyone there. We think? Charlie Brown Jr. that the Matt He liked it a lot and that I think is a differential. ”
Speaking of other bands, which projects, both music and out, inspire you?
Rupturewhich is very f*da and I am freaked out. Of music, there is a Canadian band that I like a lot called Noble. And there are just mines and like very fucking feminists, pop punk with rock and roll and like that’s crazy in them. I will try to make a collab with them.
Cool that you talked about Colabs, what is your dream feat?
“Green Day! But I also accept a Offspringif you are not asking too much [risos]”.
What is your biggest dream in music today?“I think right now I just want to do the music I like, being happy, keeping health enough to keep doing a show and live financially with music.”
We still talked about the future, what would you change in the punk scene today?
“I would actually like to have room in the media, so mainstream for punk bands. So it would be mass, so to have more visibility in the mainstream for us to know all the rock bands, as it had a one MTV In the past, which presented new content for us. Nowadays it’s all pop, pop, pop. What is not bad, which I love, but it would be a mass of having the same opportunity, everyone has the same opportunity, right? ”.
What is it like to be part of a big seal and how does it influence your creative process?
“For now, it hasn’t changed much, but I can get a better sense of how it works outside, you know?marketer‘So like, where’s the song? Let’s release the music, the things like that, you know? I didn’t have a wonderful contract, but it was a very massive opportunity, because they have the name, so it was super good for me to have this validation. Knowing that I am on the same level as all these other bands here, which is very f*da. ”
