“Do not look for answers that roll the phone screen”, warns Pope

Leo XIV appealed on the occasion of the World Youth Day

Pope Leo XIV asked young people to seek answers to the “deeper questions” of life beyond the “incessant scrolling of a screen of cell phones”.

The appeal was made in his message published Tuesday (7) on the occasion of the 40th World Youth Day, which will be held on November 23rd.

“Our deepest questions are not listened to or answers from the infinite scrolling of the screen on our cell phones, which monopolizes our attention, leaves our tired minds and our empty hearts,” he said.

The pontiff also stressed that the questions “do not take us away if we keep them closed within us or in very close circles”.

Therefore, he suggested that the realization of authentic desires “always implies going beyond ourselves” and has invited all young people to be “witnesses and therefore missionaries”.

During his message, Leo XIV also highlighted fraternity “as a peace bond”, which can “free us from indifference and spiritual laziness, helping us to overcome insulation and distrust”.

The leader of the Catholic Church took the opportunity to ask young people to be “peace craftsmen” and become “missionaries of Christ in the world”, since “many of their peers are exposed to violence, forced to use weapons, forced to separate from their loved ones, to migrate and escape”.

“Many lack education and other essential assets. Everyone share with you the search for the meaning and insecurity that accompanies it, the discomfort caused by the growing social or work pressures, the difficulty in dealing with family crises, the painful sense of lack of opportunity, remorse by the errors made”, added the Pope.

According to him, “Christian testimony was born from friendship with the Lord”, “is not confused with ideological propaganda, but it is a true principle of inner transformation and social consciousness”.

“Do not follow those who use the words of faith to divide: rather organize themselves to eliminate inequalities and reconcile the polarized and oppressed communities,” he said.

Finally, he invited the participants to the World Youth Day to pursue their wishes of peace and justice and mentioned his predecessor: “As Pope Francis said,” Christ shows that God is closeness, compassion and tenderness “.
