Historic MPB singer and composer undergoes constant monitoring at his home in Rio de Janeiro and has difficulty communicating and eating

The diagnosis of Lewy body dementia (DLB) received by the singer and songwriter Milton Nascimento caused a stir among fans last week.

The degenerative disease that impacts memory, behavior and body movements causes impairments that affect the patient’s routine. This is what the MPB icon has been experiencing.

The revelation of Milton’s diagnosis was made by his son, Augusto Nascimentoin a report by Piauí in which he talks about a trip with his father across the United States in a motorhome. The singer and composer had already been living with Parkinson’s, which is also degenerative, for two years.

Augusto told Piauí that, when he noticed symptoms and learned of the diagnosis, he asked the doctor if he could make the trip. He received authorization and set off on a 4,000 km, 16-day trip.

Milton Nascimento’s current routine

Currently, at his home in Rio de Janeiro, Milton Nascimento hardly receives visitors, has difficulty eating and, according to his son, has “silent conversations”. With professional assistance from nurses 24 hours a day, the singer is unable to establish dialogues and his eyes are lost.

One of the visits he received recently was from Márcio Borgesone of the members of the Clube da Esquina along with Milton. He is one of the rare people who has attended, since, according to the report, several people stayed away because, now, it is no longer possible to take photos with the artist.

Difficulty with eating means Milton is unable to drink liquids. That’s what caused him to be hospitalized for dehydration in June.

On the occasion of the publication of the report, Augusto made a publication about his father’s diagnosis and the last few months on social media, which he said was the only time he will talk about the subject. In an emotional excerpt, he said (via Folha de S.Paulo):

“It’s been a daily battle, intense pain and a huge void in my chest, because, somehow, my best friend is slowly leaving me.”

Augusto also reported the day-to-day difficulties, in a statement that reveals the complicity between the two:

“My father calls me and tries to talk to me, but he can’t always express himself. The countless calls every time I travel to work no longer exist, not even the curiosity for good gossip about life, or the anxious wait for each time I return home where he was waiting for me with a t-shirt with our photo on it, or the mischievous curiosity of asking me if I had beaten everyone in the training laps. jiu-jitsu.”

The musician in recent years

Despite this, the artist continued working on music, with the right to release an album with the American Esperanza Spalding in 2024. The album was nominated for Grammy for Best Vocal Album.
