The government informs that it provides antidote for treatment and carries out operations against illegal beverage adulteration schemes in the state
The state of Sao Paulo recorded, on Tuesday 7th, an increase in the number of deaths confirmed by intoxication by methanolin addition to the growth in the quantity of positive cases due to the use of the substance.
A new balance released by the State Department of Health (SES) highlights that the state records three deaths (there were two deaths according to the latest bulletin, released Monday 6) and 18 confirmations of methanol contamination, three more cases in relation to the previous survey.
There are 176 cases in total, with 158 under investigation, including seven deaths which are under investigation. According to government data, 38 events were discarded after tests failed to point to methanol contamination, and another 35 have begun to be studied.
The third death in the state it is that of Bruna de souza araújo, 30 years old. She has been hospitalized at a municipal hospital in San Bernardo Do Campo since late last month.
After the worsening of Bruna’s health, last Friday the 3rd, doctors opened the protocol to confirm the young woman’s brain death. The death was confirmed by the municipal administration on Monday evening and included in the government’s latest balance sheet.
Blood and urine samples collected in suspected cases are analyzed by the Forensic Analytical Toxicology Laboratory (LATOF), the Department of Chemistry of the University of São Paulo (USP), in Ribeirão Preto.
According to the government, the method used to analyze and identify methanol in samples can take up to an hour. To treat patients, SES reports that it has supplied 2,000 new ampoules of absolute ethyl alcohol used in detoxification.
Arrests and interdictions
To date, 42 people have been arrested in São Paulo in anti-drink operations since the beginning of the year. Of this total, 21 were arrested this week.
As for the number of establishments, 11 – seven in the capital, have been banned on charges of marketing adulterated drinks. One of these has been partially discouraged by the Court of Justice and health surveillance, but it remains prohibited to sell spirits.
This Monday, the first specialized center for the suppression of various crimes and occurrences (siege), Civil police from Sao Paulo, 103,000 empty distillate containers seized in a clandestine warehouse in Vila Formosa, in the east of the capital.
According to the police, the site worked as a “recyclable company”, whose main source of trade was the sale of empty bottles to third parties. Two men have been charged and will be investigated, police say. Their defense was not identified by the report.
