For 49%, Lula emerges stronger from the meeting with Trump, according to the Genial/Quaest poll

The Genial/Quaest poll published on Wednesday 8, indicates that the majority of Brazilians believe that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) emerged politically strengthened from his meeting with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The investigation was carried out before the video conference between the two leaders, which took place last Monday, the 6th.

For 49% of those interviewed, Lula has gained strength after his rapprochement with the American president. Another 27% say it has become “weaker,” while 10% say its position has remained the same. 14% did not know or did not respond. The perception of strengthening is predominant among Lulistas (78%) and voters who declare themselves to be left-wing (75%), while the perception of weakening is greater among Bolsonarists (51%) and people who identify with the right (48%). Among those who say they have no position, 44% say the PT member came out stronger and 25% weaker.

A majority of Brazilians also believe that Lula and Trump will “get along” and begin a closer relationship, an opinion expressed by 51% of those surveyed by the institute. Another 36% believe that the two will not have a good relationship, while 13% do not know or did not answer. Furthermore, 65% say that the Brazilian president adopts a friendly attitude towards the North American leader. Another 25% prefer the PT member to maintain a “tougher” stance on Trump.

In the same poll, 52% rated the PT member’s speech at the UN General Assembly as positive, while 34% rated it as negative. In his speech, the PT member said the country’s institutions are “under unprecedented attack” from foreign nations, but did not mention Trump by name. “We will continue as an independent nation and as a people free from any kind of guardianship,” he said.

During the conversation, which lasted about 30 minutes, Lula asked for the elimination of the 40% surtax applied to Brazilian products and the end of the restrictions imposed on the country’s authorities. Trump said he enjoyed the call and classified the dialogue as “terrific.” According to Quaest, 46% of respondents believe that Lula should make an effort to hold a new meeting with the Republican, while 44% say he should adopt a more cautious attitude and wait. The two leaders agreed to meet in person soon.

The research was conducted between October 2 and 5, based on 2,004 face-to-face interviews with Brazilians aged 16 and over. The estimated margin of error is two percentage points, plus or minus, at a 95% confidence level.
