In its first edition, the Carazinho International Film Festival, in Rio Grande do Sul, will celebrate female pioneering, highlighting the work of Alice Guy-Blaché
Starting in November, the city of Carazinho, in Rio Grande do Sul, will have a film festival to call its own. Between November 13th and 20th, the first edition of the Carazinho International Film Festivalat Cine Lúmine Carazinho, with around 40 productions, including feature films and short films, in its programming.
The first edition of the festival has as its theme “Female Pioneering: Praising Alice Guy-Blaché”, a tribute to the inventor of narrative cinema. In addition to the French filmmaker, Adélia Sampaio, the first black director of a feature film in Brazil, and Jayme Monjardim are also among those honored.
The film selection process had more than five thousand entries. The 40 selected are divided into 17 categories, including “Best Feature”, which has a prize of two thousand dollars, in addition to an international premiere.
One of the festival’s creators, along with Yasmin Martins Mendes, Diego Esteve I wanted to make it in the city where he was created because, with around 50 thousand inhabitants, Carazinho does not invest in cinema. The festival sessions also take place in the only cinema in the city, which was closed for more than 15 years and recently reopened.
“Our goal is to encourage new voices, connect talents and strengthen the cinema production chain at a local, national and international level. Whether you are an emerging filmmaker or an established name, the Carazinho International Film Festival is the ideal space to show your vision to the world. My desire is to take back to the city what it gave me. If today I work with culture, much of it came from the upbringing I had in Carazinho”account Diego.
With great ambitions, the organization plans to hold annual editions of the Carazinho International Film Festivalexpanding it to other cities, and is even thinking about making the winner of the “Best Feature” award automatically eligible for the Oscar, thanks to Yasminwho is part of the eligibility committee.
“Brazil lives in a bubble, and it is very complicated to break this bubble. Today cultural production is very centered in certain regions, which makes it impossible for many young talents to be successful. Artists can be very creative, but if they don’t know how to reach the right people, this creativity will never be seen. So we want to take the festival to cities, find these talents and build ways for them to be successful on their journey”explains Yasmin.
