Disagreement between band members reveals opposing positions on returning to the studio after ‘Senjutsu’

THE Iron Maiden hasn’t released new material since Senjutsureleased in 2021, and the band’s creative future remains undefined. The divergence between the group’s main creative forces was evident in an interview in the October edition of the magazine Metal Hammerrevealing opposing positions on recording a new album.

Bruce Dickinson expressed interest in returning to the studio, motivated by the arrival of the drummer simon dawson instead of Nicko McBrain. The vocalist reported having shared this desire with Steve Harrisstating in an interview: “I said, ‘The drummer’s doing really well, isn’t he? Maybe we should make a new album’. But he grumbled and said, ‘I don’t have time.'” The bassist and band leader’s response reflects his current attitude towards the creative process, which he considers exhausting and demanding.

Steve Harris He justified his position by explaining that composing requires isolation and intense effort. “I don’t know, that’s the answer to that. Composing is stressful. I lock myself away and torture myself for a few weeks. I wouldn’t say it’s traumatic, but it’s a lot of work”, declared the musician, who also leads the British Lion. In March 2024, Harris had already expressed a similar opinion in conversation with Eddie Trunkstating that, despite constantly having ideas, there was no concrete planning for a new project. “We still have a lot of touring ahead of us, so I don’t know. We’ll see. I keep having ideas all the time. I think I’m lucky in that sense, I have so many ideas that I don’t even know if I could put them all into practice in my entire life”, he commented.

The change in the band’s lineup took place in May, when simon dawson took over the battery after Nicko McBrain decide to step away from extensive touring. Dawsonknown for his work in British Lion and for the years with TheOutfieldmade a strong impression on Bruce Dickinson from the first rehearsals. The vocalist described himself as “pleasantly shocked” by the new member’s performance and highlighted characteristics that differentiate his approach from that of his predecessor.

Second Dickinsonthere is no strangeness in sharing the stage with the new drummer because the style of Dawson is easily distinguishable. “Isn’t it strange that when I hear what comes from behind me, I know it’s not the Nicko. So I don’t expect to see the Nickobecause everything in Simon it’s different. His drums are tuned differently, he plays the songs with a different feel than the other. Nick“, explained the singer in participation in the program Rock Of Nations. The vocalist particularly praised the rhythmic precision of Dawsonstating that his drums are tuned with a deeper, fuller tone, and that the musician strictly maintains the tempo of the songs. “The guitarists are all smiling from ear to ear and Steve also. Because no one gets that feeling of: ‘hey, you’re speeding too much’ or ‘you’re too slow’. That’s what the Simon brings: stability”, he highlighted.
