Israel bombs Lebanon as pressure grows for the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip

The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, denounced attacks against “civilian installations” in the south of the country on Saturday night (11). According to the Ministry of Health, the attacks caused one death and seven injuries. The Israeli army confirmed the offensive, saying it had “reached and dismantled the terrorist infrastructure of Hezbollah”, an ally of Hamas. Meanwhile, in Israel, the families of the hostages still held captive in the Gaza Strip await their release.

“Once again, southern Lebanon is the target of atrocious Israeli aggression against civilian installations. Without justification or pretext,” said Joseph Aoun. “But the gravity of this latest aggression lies in the fact that it occurs after the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip,” he added.

Lebanon’s official Ani news agency reported that Israeli warplanes carried out ten strikes on bulldozers and bulldozer parks last night. “The presence of these devices and Hezbollah’s activities in this area constitute a violation of the agreements reached between Israel and Lebanon,” he added.

Despite the ceasefire on November 27, 2024, which ended more than a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Israeli military continues to carry out almost daily attacks in Lebanon, claiming to be targeting members of the Iranian-backed movement.

The UN reported in early October that 103 civilians had been killed in Lebanon since the ceasefire took effect.

Waiting for the release of the hostages in Gaza

With nearly 200,000 displaced Palestinians returning to the northern Gaza Strip since a ceasefire took effect in the Palestinian enclave on Friday (10), the next step in US President Donald Trump’s plan to promote peace in the Middle East includes the release of the last Israeli hostages still held by Hamas, in exchange for the release of more than 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Among them are 250 security detainees, such as a man arrested for involvement in the lynching of two Israeli soldiers in Ramallah in 2000. Another name on the list is Mahmoud Khawam, a senior Hamas official freed in 2011 in exchange for soldier Gilad Shalit, and arrested again in Gaza last year.

Israeli society is divided on the issue. He spoke with Yael, a resident of a kibbutz near the Gaza border AFP about your concern. “It’s difficult because each of them killed Jews. But this will allow the hostages to return and maybe we can start to heal our country,” he said. “We cannot remain prisoners of this. So yes, the price to pay is very, very high. We don’t like it, but sometimes you have to know how to accept it,” he concluded.

On the Palestinian side, the imminent release of the prisoners raises many doubts about their final fate. Will they go to the West Bank, where they will be welcomed as heroes, or will they be sent abroad, as has happened in the past? A question that, to this day, remains unanswered.
