Since last month, Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, the heroes of Breaking Bad, have had statues of them in Albuquerque, the city in the state of New Mexico, where the action of the cult series takes place. The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of actors Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, show creator Vince Gilligan and Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller.
During this inauguration, Vince Gilligan claimed to have seen in these statues “Two of the best actors America has ever produced. Two actors, in their characters, like two tragic figures in a cautionary tale.” But he also felt that honoring these fictional characters would not be universally welcome in New Mexico. And he was right.
The presence of these statues in Albuquerque really upsets Representative Rod Montoya, Republican of New Mexico. “I’m glad it’s running the state’s business, but really? Are we going to literally glorify the Matthew Growers?”A politician was kidnapped at the Fox News microphone.
“This is not the kind of recognition we want for the city of Albuquerque or our state.”– says radio presenter Eddie Aragon The comments were reported by Variety. “Honestly, what you saw in Breaking Bad should be seen as a documentary. I really think it’s a reality in New Mexico. We try to say it’s fiction, but it’s a reality…”
Breaking Bad statue unveiled in New Mexico…I loved that show when it was on, but statues shouldn’t be made for real characters, not characters from a show that’s barely ten years old. pic.twitter.com/TGfqLgpDxM

Aragon regrets the arrival of these statues, and the Conquistador Juan de OnateNew Mexico’s first Hispanic governor was overthrown. “Now we have new statues, fictional characters that we put up that our progressive mayor supported. We’re funding this to get rid of real historical figures so that now, even better, we have fictional characters that are drug users.”He mutters ironically.
For Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, erecting these statues made sense given the economic impact of Breaking Bad on the city. “While the stories may be fictional, the jobs are real every day”he says. “The city is also a character… We see ourselves in the show in many ways, both good and bad.”
