To help with the cinematic marathon, Rolling Stone Brasil prepared a list of 15 international productions to keep an eye on at the 2025 São Paulo Exhibition

From October 16th, the São Paulo International Film Festivalone of the biggest cinema events in Brazil and Latin America, presents its 49th edition, which allows cinephiles and cinema enthusiasts to check out hundreds of new productions, works by renowned directors and new talents in sessions distributed throughout São Paulo and the region.

To help with the movie marathon, the Rolling Stone Brazil prepared a list with 15 international productions to keep an eye on São Paulo Exhibition 2025including Frankensteinnew feature film Guillermo del Toro (Pinocchio), Bugoniawith Emma Stone (Poor Creatures) and No Other Choiceby South Korean director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy). Frankenstein

In FrankensteinVictor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant but self-centered scientist, brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the ruin of both the creator and his tragic creation. A reinterpretation of the classic novel by Mary Shelley by the director Guillermo del Toro.

Bugonia

In Bugoniatwo young people obsessed with conspiracy theories kidnap the powerful CEO of a large company (Emma Stone), convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

No Other Choice

In No Other ChoiceMan-su, a papermaking expert with 25 years of experience, leads such a full life that he can say to himself with conviction, “I have everything I need.” Alongside his wife Miri, his two children and his dogs, he lives happy days, until he is surprised by the news that he was fired. The shock is devastating, but still, Man-su promises himself that he will find a new job in three months for the sake of his family. However, the reality turns out to be much more complicated. Despite his determination, he spends more than a year jumping from interview to interview and supporting himself with a job in commerce. Before long, he begins to run the risk of losing the house he fought so hard for. In desperation, he shows up at Moon Paper by surprise to hand in his resume, but ends up humiliated by line manager Sun-chul. Convinced that he is more qualified than any candidate to work at the company, Man-su makes a drastic decision: “If there isn’t a vacancy for me, I’ll have to create one.”

It Was Just an Accident

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, It Was Just An Accidentfrom Jafar Panahibegins as a small accident triggers a series of escalating consequences.

The Sound of Fall

The Sound of Fall features four girls, Alma, Erika, Angelika and Lenka, who spend their youth on the same farm in northern Germany. As the house transforms over a century, the echoes of the past remain there, on the walls. Although separated by time, their lives begin to reflect on each other.

Mirrors No. 3

Mirrors No. 3 features Laura, a student from Berlin, who miraculously survives a car accident. Physically unharmed, but deeply shaken, she is taken in by Betty, who witnessed the accident and cares for her lovingly. Little by little, Betty’s husband and son overcome their initial reluctance, and an almost familiar tranquility sets in. But soon, they can no longer ignore the past and Laura must face her own life.

Sirât

Opening film of the Exhibition, Sirât features a father and son arriving at a rave in the mountains of southern Morocco. Both are searching for Mar — daughter and sister — who disappeared months earlier at one of those endless parties. Surrounded by electronic music and a raw, unfamiliar sense of freedom, they distribute the young woman’s photo over and over again. Hope fades, but the two persist and follow a group of regulars towards one last party in the desert. As they advance through this scorching landscape, the journey forces them to confront their own limits.

The History of Sound

The History of Sound begins in 1917, when Lionel (Paul Mescal) — a young and talented music student — meets David (Josh O’Connor) at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over their shared deep love of popular folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, which takes them on an impromptu trip through the Maine countryside to collect traditional folk songs. This unexpected encounter, the love affair that springs from it, and the music they collect and preserve will influence the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness.

Palestine 36

Palestine 36 shows villages across Palestine rising up against British colonial rule, Yusuf, who tries to build a life beyond this growing unrest, finds himself torn between his rural home and the restlessness of Jerusalem. But history is relentless. With the increase in the number of Jewish immigrants fleeing anti-Semitism in Europe and the Palestinian population uniting in the largest and longest revolt against 30 years of colonial rule, everything seems to be heading towards an inevitable conflict, at a decisive moment for the British Empire and the future of the entire region.

New Wave

Richard Linklater (Before Sunset) brings New Wavethe story of Godard filming Harassed (1960), told in the style and spirit of the director.

Blue Moon

Also from Linklater, Blue Moon takes place on the night of March 31, 1943, when legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart, experiencing a personal and creative crisis, finds himself at Sardi’s bar, while his former partner Richard Rodgers celebrates the triumphant premiere of his revolutionary musical “Oklahoma!”.

Eddington

Eddington is set in May 2020, when a standoff between the sheriff and mayor of a small town unleashes chaos, pitting neighbor against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.

Father Mother Sister Brother

Father Mother Sister Brotherwinner of the Venice Film Festival, is a feature film, although it is carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three stories deal with the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parents, and also between themselves. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present and in a different country. “Father” is set in the northeast of the USA, “Mother” in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” in Paris, France. The film is a series of character studies: quiet, observational, and nonjudgmental—a comedy, but laced with undertones of melancholy.

Young Mothers

In Young Mothersof the Dardenne brothersJessica, Perla, Julie, Ariane and Naïma are living in a shelter for young mothers. Five teenagers hoping for a better life for themselves and their babies.

Jay Kelly

Closing film of the Exhibition, Jay Kelly features famous movie actor Jay Kelly (George Clooney) on a journey of self-discovery, facing his past and his present. Alongside his dedicated manager Ron (Adam Sandler), they walk the delicate line between life’s regrets and its remarkable achievements.
