When we find him in Sandman, from the very first moments, Tom Sturridge hits the audience’s retinas as much with his mysterious aura as with his atypical physicality. But stepping into the shoes of a character from the rich imagination of Neil Gaiman – author of graphic novels sand man – The British actress had to make several sacrifices, which led to a ton of hard work and dedication.
in the interview Digital spyTom Sturridge explained the importance of the physical aspect of Morpheus, the king of dreams and nightmares, as well as the steps he took to prepare for this particular role:
“There are so many aspects of his physicality that were important to me, just because he doesn’t express himself traditionally, most of the time. So the way it moves, I think, can be a means of meaningful expression“.
The actor explained that at the beginning of the series, Morpheus is “Naked and silent for 45 minutesSo the challenge was to show that Morpheus was not human. Sturridge wanted to convey the idea that Morpheus is infinite – one of the seven extremely powerful beings who are older and more powerful than the other six infinites: Death (Death), Delirium (Delirium), Desire (Desire), Despair (Despair), Fate ( fate) and destruction (destruction).
To convey this feeling that Morpheus comes from another world, Tom Sturridge turned to… the gym!
I wanted to create a body that looks like a creature and matches the images that are in the comics. What comes back… It is one whose flesh is burnt and only falls and bones
“It was difficult to achieve in the sense that it required discipline, exercise and eating very little. But actually acting is such a fleeting job. We are constantly trying to catch the clouds when we are working. Training is really simple. Because you just do the six things they tell you to do, and it works.“
Tom Sturridge as The Sandman
Tom Sturridge said it was “Not so funny“To undergo such rigorous training, but he was more worried about the reaction of the millions of fans who love him so much.” sand man and Morpheus. “It weighed more than the weights“- the actor joked.
A bit of a worry though since Neil Gaiman himself created the series for David S. With Goyer and Alan Heinberg. The series reunites a number of actors in brief but iconic roles, including Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Boyd Holbrook as Corinth, and Vivienne Achampong as Lucien.
