Starring Glen Powell (Everyone But You), the film combines exciting action scenes with powerful social criticism

The Survivornew from Edgar Wrightresponsible for In Rhythm of Escape (2017), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) and Last Night in Soho (2021), got a new trailer last Monday (13). The preview shows the film’s protagonist, played by Glen Powell (Everyone But You), going through a series of ambushes to try to survive a deadly television program, while unraveling the mysteries that that society hides.

With intense action sequences, The Survivor promises an electrifying experience and has everything to leave the audience breathless from start to finish. Below, check out everything we already know about the new film, which hits theaters soon.

What is the story of The Survivor?

In a dystopian future, the USA lives in a totalitarian state, and the population’s favorite program is the game show “The Running Man”. In it, participants (known as Runners) need to compete to survive: for 30 days, they are hunted by professional killers. Your every move is broadcast to the public, and the prize for the winners gets bigger every day.

Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is a worker with a sick daughter, who does not have the money to buy the necessary medicines. The TV producer Dan Killian (Josh Brolin, Avengers: Endgame) convinces him to join the program in hopes of saving her.

But Ben discovers that not everything is as simple as it seems, and there are darker political disputes at play. Rebellious and charismatic, he will become an unexpected public idol — and a threat to the entire system, making the task of surviving even more difficult.

Like this Carrie the Stranger (1976), The Shining (1980) and It – The Thing (2017), The Survivor It is also an adaptation of the work of Stephen Kingthe Master of Horror. The funny thing is that The Competitorreleased in 1978, was set in the dystopian future of… 2025.

The first film adaptation

Before returning to theaters in 2025, The Survivor had already been adapted for cinema previously, in 1987, directed by Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky & Hutch: Double Justice) and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator).

However, the production was criticized by the Kingbecause it maintained the premise of the American reality show, but changed a large part of the original: in the book, Ben Richards joins the program because he is desperate to save his sick daughter. In the film, he is a police officer who is wrongly convicted and forced to participate in the game.

“It was completely out of my control. I had nothing to do with the production [do filme]…doesn’t have much in common with the novel except the title”he said King to the magazine Cinefantastique (via We We Minored in Film).

The new version of The Survivor promises to be more faithful to the original. The reinterpretation aims to delve deeper into the social criticism proposed by King about a society controlled by the media, which exploits the Runners’ suffering for the public’s entertainment.

Name change in Brazil

For the new version, Paramount Pictures considered keeping the title of the book, The Competitor. However, despite criticism from Kingthe long film with Schwarzenegger became a classic among fans, who demanded the change to The Survivorfollowing the first film. The studio, of course, complied with the request.
