Ukrainian PM discusses energy attacks in talks with US

Ukraine’s prime minister said Tuesday he will focus on Russian attacks on his country’s power grid in talks in Washington ahead of this week’s visit by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

“At every meeting in Washington, we raised the topic of defending Ukrainian energy, supporting our resilience during the winter and ways to defend it,” Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko wrote on the messaging app Telegram.

He described the priorities of his visit as “energy, sanctions and developing cooperation with the United States in new ways that can strengthen both our countries.”

Zelenskiy meets US President Donald Trump on Friday to discuss Ukraine’s air defense and long-range strike capabilities. The leaders spoke to each other twice over the weekend amid intensified discussions over the possible supply of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kiev.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent “reaffirmed firm U.S. support for Ukrainian sovereignty and underscored the United States’ commitment to ensuring lasting peace” during talks with Svyrydenko, according to a U.S. Treasury statement.

He also thanked Svyrydenko for supporting the US-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund.

In September, Ukraine and the United States held the first board meeting of the joint investment fund, created as part of a deal to give Washington preferential access to Ukrainian minerals in exchange for investments.

Svyrydenko is accompanied by the secretary of the National Defense and Security Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, and a group of officials from the government, central bank and other bodies.
