Marcos defends Hugo Souza after his national team debut: “It’s difficult for a goalkeeper”

Idol of Palmeiras, I say that the goalkeeper suffers more in this situation and defended that Hugo did not miss a goal conceded

After making his debut in a defeat in the goal of the Brazilian team, goalkeeper Hugo Souza received special support on social media. Former Palmeiras goalkeeper Marcos, five-time champion in 2002, defended the Corinthians player.

Marcos said the situation is different for goalkeepers. The five-time champion said that no matter what experience you have at the club, when you come to the national team the player feels the difference and it is a new reality.

“I see people commenting on Hugo Souza’s debut with the Brazilian national team. It tells you: the national team is a disaster, it’s difficult for a goalkeeper. Even if we have experience here, you can be from… your team, having 300 games in the Paulista, 500 in the Brazilian Championship, but in the national team we arrive there with dry ears. We don’t have the experience to play with guys from abroad,” he underlined.

For Marcos, Hugo did not miss Japan’s third goal. He believes the Japanese player got too close to the goalkeeper, which made it difficult to defend. Furthermore, the Palmeiras idol believes that if it were a Corinthians match, Hugo Souza would have more confidence in coming out to cut in the cross.

“And I don’t even think that the goal was Hugo’s fault. I think he came very close. He could have been a miracle in that defense, if he had managed to get the ball out. And maybe the decision not to leave was the wrong one, because he is great. I’m sure that if he had been at Corinthians he would have left because he has much more confidence there. But it’s a debut for the national team,” he underlined.

No judgment at the premiere

Finally, Marcos stressed that he would use the same criteria with any other Brazil goalkeeper. The five-time champion stressed that the player cannot be evaluated based on his debut and hopes that Hugo Souza will have other opportunities in the national team.

“I would say if I were Weverton, Brazão, Rafael, just like I’m talking about Hugo. I think only with success can you demonstrate your work. So, judging someone based on debut is very unfair. At least that’s what I would like you to do to me if I were to debut today with the Brazilian team. So life goes on, let’s hope he gets other opportunities to show his work,” he stressed.
