Artist assumes total creative control and rescues melancholy in a new phase
After a three-year hiatus, Joji is back with the single “PIXELATED KISSES”announced on Tuesday the 14th. This is their first release since the album Smithereens (2022)which made the hit “Glimpse of Us”certified twice platinum by the RIAA and leader of Spotify Global 50.
Entirely written, produced and recorded by himself, the single brings the artist closer to a raw and intimate aesthetic. He employs minimalist vocals over restrained trap beats, creating a contrast between delicacy and distorted texture. Although short, the track explores themes of distance, desire and communication mediated by technology.
Throughout its trajectory, Joji transitioned from trap/lo-fi to melancholic and introspective alternative pop. He has four studio albums: In Tongues (2017), Ballads 1 (2018), Nectar (2020) and Smithereens (2022).
The new single, with his original production and complete artistic signature, signals that he returns to dialogue with his roots while moving towards new sound territories.
