What if, after nearly thirty years of existence, the Vagabond manga was finally adapted into an anime? The seminal work of Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk), this 37-volume series (available in France from Delcourt/Tonkam) retraces the life of the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, based on the novels. A stone and a saber and perfect light By Eiji Yoshikawa.
A French studio to adapt the manga into a TV series?
A famous swordsman who went down in history both for his exploits and the writings he left behind, Musashi is one of the most emblematic figures of feudal Japan. Many films were dedicated to him, including the memorable trilogy starring the legendary Toshiro Mifune.
The success of the manga Vagabond owes as much to the fame of its protagonist as it does to the striking beauty of Takehiko Inoue’s line. Its popularity should have logically led to an animated adaptation – and yet such a project never saw the light of day. However, all that could change, thanks to French studio Fortice (Arcane).
given during the interview CrunchyrollThe co-founder of the studio, Pascal Charou, confided that he dreamed of turning Vagabond into an animated series. A statement that immediately woke up fans of the manga and Arcane, even if, in fact, the project still seems very hypothetical:
The first adaptation that comes to mind would be Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue. It’s a masterpiece of incredible depth, with beautiful illustrations that would be fascinating to animate.
A fan-approved project, but one that doesn’t seem close to success
At this stage there is no indication that the author has been contacted. And for good reason: Takehiko Inoue is known for his extreme demands and devotion to the craftsmanship of his works. He also adapted his other cult manga Slam Dunk into a feature film (The First Slam Dunk), a true gem of animation that we can’t recommend enough.
But this simple echo was enough to ignite many fans who have been dreaming of a worthy adaptation of the Vagabond name for years. Still, you’ll need to be patient before you can hope this fantasy becomes a reality, Fortich is currently working on new projects in the League of Legends universe, where Arcane comes from.
Season two of Arcane is now available exclusively on Netflix.
