We are in 2002, twenty years ago at the beginning of Sam Raim’s director’s first man-spider. After being bitten by a genetically modified spider, young Peter Parker gradually realizes that he now has some unusual new skills.
After removing his glasses – now useless – and catching up with the bus in a matter of seconds, he discovers new reflexes, to put it mildly, annoying. Indeed, before he can have a quiet dinner in the school cafeteria and Mary-Jane Watson (the girl he is madly in love with) walks past him, the latter slams into a soda puddle and almost falls to the ground.
It was then that Peter, for a second, caught up with him and miraculously managed to recover all the elements of his food drawer during the flight. A scene that had a small impact on the audience during the release of the film, but what’s even more impressive when you know it was performed … without the slightest trick.
Indeed, as we learn in the audio commentary of the film, only the glue tube and the durability of Toby Maguire were needed for the magic work.
“ There are no virtual effects on this scene. Toby did it all himself “Says Kirsten Dunst, Mary-Jane’s translator. “Pretty impressive. We used glue to hold the set in his hands. We filmed this scene with falling objects!”
The 156 performances, more precisely, were really needed to achieve the desired result, as this was specified by the head of special effects, John Dixtra. The real tour, especially since, according to producer Laura Ziskin, time was strictly limited:
“(…) The studio asked us to remove this scene from the filming “He explains. “We have to have two days to shoot this scene. But with the vicissitudes of production, we were asked to reduce it by 1 day. And we have to shoot this scene in one day. This sequence has to be cut, but Sam And I held on. So we decided to shoot anyway and finished in one day. It was a long day. “
Long day … 16 hours, exactly as he also claims in the audio commentary. Fortunately, Toby Maguire completed this little achievement and gave the fans this delicious moment.
