Veteran criticizes superficial judgment on the method and says that following the character is a matter of commitment
During his participation in the London Film Festival this Wednesday (15), the award-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis publicly defended his approach to acting, known as “Method Acting” (an acting technique that aims to deepen interpretation through the connection between the actor’s personal experiences and the character’s emotions and motivations), and criticized the way in which the process has been misinterpreted in recent years.
Famous for delving deeply into his characters — even off camera — in films like Black Blood and New York gangs, Day-Lewis stated that most criticism of his technique comes from a place of misinformation.
“All the recent comments about method acting are invariably from people who understand little or nothing about what it really involves”declared, according to the The Independent. “It’s as if we were involved in a fake science, or a cult. But it’s just a way to free yourself, to be ready to react spontaneously alongside your co-stars.”
The actor also rejected the idea that his method is exaggerated or eccentric: “It’s easy to say that I’m outside of myself. A lot of people have done that. But to me it makes sense. You have an obligation to try to understand, as much as possible, what it’s like to be inside that experience.”
Day-Lewis returned to the cinema with Anemonehis first film since 2017. The film, written by him in partnership with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis — who also directs the production — opens in the UK on November 7. Despite expectations, the work divided specialized critics. One of the harshest comments classified the film as “the worst thing Daniel Day-Lewis has done — and will do, unless he and his son are planning a sequel.”
