Prime Video subscribers, hurry to this thriller starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino, Donnie Brasco released in 1997!
First steps in the mafia
New York, 1978. Agent Joe Pistone is chosen to infiltrate the Bonanno mafia clan on behalf of the FBI. With the help of an unknown sidekick, Lefty Ruggiero, he’ll try to avoid detection… and learn to “live the dream”!
After being the godfather to Francis Ford Coppola, who was then a cocaine-trafficking kingpin in Scarface, Al Pacino this time plays a mobster at the bottom of the ladder. Seemingly nothing, he manages to bring humanity to his character while emphasizing his danger, partially avoiding the trappings of a glorified gangster. He will act as a mentor to Donnie Brasco’s character Alias, played by Johnny Depp in Infiltrator Piston.
The latter was a rising star after directing Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, The Dead Man and Arizona Dream. We find him very comfortable here in a new kind of role: a guy who plays a double game and manages to deceive his people at the risk of his life.
why did he stay
Mike Newell’s direction is sensible and classic, taking advantage of the wide 2.35:1 aspect ratio to get lots of people moving into the image, giving it a dynamic that compensates for the ever-steady camera.
But if Donnie Brasco is considered a thriller classic, it’s mostly thanks to its clever screenplay, the art of gangster imagery, and the performances of Depp and Pacino.
