Moto2: Brazilian Diogo Moreira breaks the track record and takes pole position in Australia

Moreira was the fastest and will race on Sunday to try to take the lead of the classification.

The most talked about name in the motorbike world in the last week is Diogo Moreira. The Brazilian announced himself in MotoGP, winning the last remaining place on the grid with Honda’s satellite team, with a multi-year contract that guarantees the Sao Paulo native for the next few seasons as well. But before that, the quest for the Moto2 title is not over yet. After González’s punishment in the last race, the Italtrans driver put himself even stronger in the fight for the championship. And currently only nine points separate the Brazilian from the Spaniard.

On Friday evening (17), Moreira demonstrated that he wasn’t chosen for the premier class for nothing. With the right to break the track record and a time of 1min29s817, the rider of bike no. 10 took pole position for Sunday’s race at the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

How was the ranking?

In Q1, favoritism went to Daniel Holgado. The CF Moto rookie stood out throughout the season, even winning races. He confirmed his good performance by being the fastest of the session, with a time of 1min30s197, followed by Iván Ortolá, Albert Arenas and Adrián Huertas. The only crash was that of Marcos Ramírez, who was unable to advance.

Right at the start of Q2, Aron Canet, who occupies third place in the championship, crashed. The same fate then befell Ivan Ortolá, classified in Q1.

Meanwhile, Diogo Moreira completely dominated, giving his opponents no chance, managing to qualify ahead of his main opponent and remaining strong in the fight for the world title.

The front row was completed by the Intact GP duo, with Senna Agius and Manuel González, followed by Jake Dixon, Daniel Holgado, David Alonso, Ayumu Sasaki, Aron Canet, Darryn Binder and Barry Baltus completing the top 10.

The Moto2 race will take place on Saturday evening (18th), with the start scheduled for 11.15pm (Brasilia time), after the one-hour postponement announced by the FIM due to weather conditions. Moreira can once again get good points and even take the lead of the championship this weekend.
