Robert De Niro, 79, reprises his role as gangster wiseguy in Barry Levinson’s film, written by Goodfellas screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi.
After Martin Scorsese’s large-scale crime thriller The Irishman in 2019, it was believed that Robert De Niro would say goodbye to gangster roles.
The Hollywood Reporter Today shows that it is not so! The 79-year-old actor will play two iconic organized crime figures, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, in the film Wise Guys.
This drama about the Italian-American mafia in the 1950s will be directed by Barry Levinson, Rain Man and Good Morning Vietnam. In addition, the 80-year-old filmmaker has already directed De Niro in The Sleepers and The Wizard of Lies.
In 1957, Vito Genovese wants to kill Frank Costello, but his assassination attempt fails. Wounded and debilitated, Costello will do anything to escape the criminal world and retire.
This story will be told by Wise Guys, whose script will be written by a big name: Nicolas Pileg. The latter signed Martin Scorsese’s Les Affranchis and Casino screenplays. The 89-year-old author is clearly not done with the world of gangsters.
Note that this Frank Costello has nothing in common with the one portrayed by Jack Nicholson in The Departed. In this particular case, screenwriter William Monaghan took the name of a famous mobster for this feature film, but was inspired by another criminal figure for the character: James White Bulger.
The latter was the godfather of Boston’s underworld for more than 50 years until he was arrested in 2011 not too long after.
What’s next for De Niro?
Before taking on this dual role, we’ll find Robert De Niro in Amsterdam, the new David O. Russell in theaters November 2.
He will next star in Killers of the Flower Moon opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, which is expected in spring 2023.
In this historical epic, set in the 1920s, Scorsese tells the true story of the murder of several members of the Osage Indian tribe in Oklahoma. They were killed after finding oil on their land. The FBI is investigating.
