Netflix didn’t wait more than a day to order a season 2 for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. The animated series adapted from the popular infiltration video game made its big debut on the platform on October 14.
A long-awaited project, especially since it was not supposed to see the light of day in series or animation, but in the form of a feature film intended for cinema. Tom Hardy was then set to play the main character Sam Fisher, an announcement was made shortly after the release of The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
10 years of development
The film Splinter Cell was then in the hands of Doug Liman, a very popular director in Hollywood and a specialist in action blockbusters (memory at Cannes, Tomorrow among his biggest successes). But almost a decade of development, unfortunately, did not allow the project to be implemented.
Thus, producer Basil Ivanyk finally confided in November 2024 to the American media direct Complete abandonment of the project: “We just couldn’t find the right way to do it, with the story or the budget. But it would have been great. We had a million different versions, but the movie had to be hard and awesome. It was one of those movies that left us, and it’s really sad.”
Another actor than Tom Hardy who plays in the series Splinter Cell
In parallel with the film, another adaptation project was able to move forward in the shadows. Produced by Netflix, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is an animated series based on an original story. Thus, the plot of the program does not follow the plot of the video games. As for Sam Fisher’s translator (the original version), Liev Schreiber was given the role, not Tom Hardy.
The success of this adaptation is now doubtful. In just a few days, the series amassed millions of views worldwide on Netflix and was ordered for a new season just 24 hours after being uploaded to the streaming service.
The first season of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is now available exclusively on Netflix.
