Hidden under the helmet for 30 years, this big international star reveals his face in Chien 51!

He’s been hiding under his headphones for years, all the while being one of the music world’s biggest stars. He is Thomas Bangalter, one half of the electro duo Daft Punk (with Guy-Manuel de Homme-Christo).

The seminal French Touch group, formed in 1993 and disbanded in 2021, has sold millions of albums around the world, hidden, or almost always hidden, by a distinctive label.

Many collaborations with cinema, but…

Thomas Bangalter has been working in movies for almost 20 years, but he has never played a full-fledged role in front of the camera before.

He made a very secret appearance in Quentin Dupierre’s Réalité in 2014, as well as Tron: Legacy in 2011 (for which he also co-wrote the soundtrack with Daft Punk). He has composed soundtracks for several films, including Iréversible, Climax and most recently Daaaaaalí!.

So Dog 51 marks Thomas Bangalter’s first “real” film role. He appears at the beginning of the film in the lead role of Kessel. How did he end up in front of the camera? At the AlloCiné microphone, Cédric Jimenez explains behind the scenes of this wonderful surprise for Daft Punk fans.

First, we found it funny that the inventor of artificial intelligence was Thomas Bangalter who invented the robot and put an end to it. I wanted to start this movie with a character that was memorable. Together with the producer Hugo Seliniak, when we had this idea, we said to ourselves: “But why not Thomas?”.

He burst out laughing when I suggested it!

I have known Thomas for several years. He is someone I really like, who I admire immensely. I told him “Thomas, I’m calling you about my movie. It’s not a musical, so you might find it a little strange. There’s a role playing in it.” He burst out laughing! He told me “Do you want me to act in your movie?” “. So we saw each other, talked about it, and then it really excited me. I think he really enjoyed doing it.

It was really cool to play Thomas as an actor. He did it with great seriousness and great professionalism. JI was very happy to be in Thomas’s movie, really.

Cédric Jimenez’s 51 Dogs, starring Gilles Lelouch, Adele Exarchopoulos, Louis Garrel, Romain Dury, Artus, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Thomas Bangalter, opens in theaters on Wednesday, October 15.
