The US president accuses Canadian officials of misrepresenting former President Ronald Reagan in the anti-tariff ad campaign
The president donald trump declared on Thursday evening, the 23rd, that he would conclude “all commercial negotiations” with the Canada due to a TV commercial opposing US tariffs. Trump said the article distorted facts and called it “disgraceful behavior” aimed at influencing U.S. judicial decisions.
Trump’s social media post was published after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he plans to double his country’s exports to countries outside the United States due to the threat posed by Trump’s tariffs. Trump’s call for an abrupt end to negotiations could further inflame trade tensions that have already been building for months between the two neighboring countries.
Trump posted: “The Ronald Reagan Foundation just announced that Canada fraudulently used an ad, which is FALSE, with Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.”
“The ad cost $75,000. They only did it to interfere with the ruling of the United States Supreme Court and other courts,” Trump wrote on social media. “TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO NATIONAL SECURITY AND THE ECONOMY OF THE UNITED STATES. Due to their shameful behavior, ALL TRADE DEALINGS WITH CANADA ARE CLOSED.”
Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The prime minister will leave for a summit in Asia on Friday morning, while Trump is expected to do the same later in the evening.
Nearly 85% of cross-border trade in both directions remains tariff-free as the United States and Canada continue to adhere to an existing North American trade agreement called USMCA.
But Trump’s global sector tariffs, particularly on steel, aluminum and automobiles, have hit Canada hard, leading to job losses and pressure on businesses. /AP and AFP
