The director stated that Bugonia, his new film starring Emma Stone (Poor Creatures) and Jesse Plemons (Civil War), could be his last work for a long time
After an almost uninterrupted run of films between 2022 and 2024, the Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favorite) revealed that he intends to take a break from his career. In an interview with the website Colliderthe director stated that Bugoniahis new feature film starring Emma Stone (Poor Creatures) and Jesse Plemons (Civil War), could be his last work for a long time.
“I can’t keep going at this pace anymore”, he admitted Lanthimos. “I think I need a break. I’ve said this before, between the other three films, but now I’m serious. They can charge me.”
Between 2022 and 2024, the director filmed three large films, all with significant critical reception. According to him, the creative urgency and the accumulation of ready-made projects led him to film tirelessly: “Every time a script was ready, I felt compelled to shoot it straight away. It felt wrong to put something on hold. So I forced myself to find time, even during long processes, like post-production on Poor Creatures”, he explained.
Bugonia marks the return of Lanthimos to collaboration with Emma Stone — who won an Oscar for Poor Creatures — and the absurd humor that characterizes his work. The film is an adaptation of Save the Green Planet! (2003), with a script by Will Tracy (The Menu), and accompanies two cousins (Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who kidnap a powerful CEO (stone), convinced that she is part of an alien conspiracy.
To Lanthimosthe project carries a symbolic weight: it is the closing of an intense creative cycle. “You find the strength and will to continue, but at some point it runs out. I got to this point”, he stated.
The break doesn’t feel like a definitive goodbye, but a necessary breather. Since gaining international prominence with Canine Tooth (2009), the director maintained a rare regularity, delivering acclaimed films practically every two years.
