You’d think that the presence of superstars in the cast of Eden would guarantee a new Ron Howard movie in theaters. Unfortunately, this feature film was ultimately condemned for live broadcast on the Prime Video platform due to its failure at the US box office.
A disastrous start at the US box office
Inspired by the true story of European settlers in the Galapagos archipelago, Eden brings together a cast including Jude Law and Vanessa Kirby in the lead roles, as well as Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas and Daniel Bruhl. Prestigious distribution, which should have made the film a huge success in theaters. But unfortunately things didn’t go as planned…
With a comfortable $55 million budget, Eden grossed just over a million on its first day in the United States and just over 2.5 million worldwide (the film was released in several European countries, including Italy, Poland, and Germany). A real commercial furnace that explains the decision to cancel the release of the cinema in France.
Where can you see the film in France?
If the public (or rather, the rare viewers who went to see it in theaters) received it quite well, the American critics on the other hand, degraded Eden. With a very average rating of 58% on our fellow site Rotten Tomatoes (out of 116 reviews), the film is among the lowest rated of Ron Howard’s entire career.
A large number of critics emphasized the cartoonish aspect of the story and the weak development of the characters. While the filmmaker’s aesthetic appeal and academic but still effective staging have garnered much critical acclaim, the entirety has clearly failed to convince many in the transatlantic press.
Who knows if this mixed reception, neither enthusiastic nor completely hostile, will prompt French Prime Video subscribers to give Eden a chance, now available on Amazon’s streaming service?
