MotoGP: Pecco Bagnaia shines and wins pole in Sepang

The Italian secures pole in Sepang, followed by Alex Márquez and Franco Morbidelli on the front row.

The champion is back! Pecco Bagnaia rises from the “ashes” and wins pole position at the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Italian from Ducati, who is going through a difficult phase in MotoGP after overtaking Marco Bezzecchi and losing third place in the championship, recorded the best time in the classification held in the early hours (Brasilia time) of this Saturday (25th), in Sepang, and at the turn off overtook Fabio Quartararo. Álex Márquez and Franco Morbidelli complete the front row.

Marco Bezzecchi, however, was unable to access Q2, leaving him out of pole position and he will have to make a recovery attempt if he wants to maintain the bronze medal in the championship.

The intense dispute in Q1 saw Aldeguer, Marini and Bagnaia alternating in the lead; The Spaniard secured a place in Q2 even after a crash and was the protagonist of an unusual scene in the Gresini pits.

Q1 was held and saw the participation of the last winners of the season. Aldeguer started in the lead with 1:7:698, followed by Bagnaia and Raul Fernandez who closed the top-3.

With 7 minutes to go, Luca Marini, who had already led free practice 2, performed the best spin and clocked 1:57:536. Aldeguer regained the lead, clocking 1:57:148, and despite crashing on lap 4, he progressed to Q2, alongside Pecco Bagnaia who clocked 1:57:190.

Upon returning to the pits at the end of Q1, Fermín created an unusual scene when he crashed his motorbike into the pit garage and almost hit the Gresini mechanics.

From last to first: Bagnaia reacts in the end and takes pole in Sepang.

In Q2 Pedro Acosta started to dictate the pace with 1:57.363, but was soon overtaken by Fabio Quartararo, who clocked 1:57.195. In the final stretch Pecco Bagnaia, who until then occupied the last position, surprised by clocking 1:57.001 and taking the lead.

With two minutes to go Acosta, who was third, crashed and ended up in fifth place. Quartararo tried again to react, but Bagnaia maintained the best time and confirmed pole position in Sepang. Alex Márquez and Franco Morbidelli complete the front row.

MotoGP returns this Saturday at 4am (Brasilia time), for the sprint race of the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.
