Among the many true anecdotes related to the Titanic, some have flown completely under the radar, even in James Cameron’s cult film. However, the director seems to have given one of them a wary little wink.
Although Cameron tried to honor some of the true stories of the passengers of the legendary liner, it was impossible to include them all. With over 2,200 people on board, telling everyone’s lives would require an entire documentary series. The film was supposed to focus on Jack and Rose, a fictional couple played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. However, one figure has earned her place on the screen: Violet Jessop.
At the age of 25, Violet boarded the Titanic, after already knowing the RMS Olympic, on which she worked as a ward. The Olympic collided with the British warship HMS Hawke, but without casualties. This did not deter Violet, who continued to work on liners until joining the Titanic.
Its role during the sinking of the Titanic is noteworthy. He not only survived but also helped several passengers to escape. It will be recalled that she managed to get into a lifeboat with the baby before being rescued by the RMS Carpathia, which took her to New York. You’d think his sea adventures would end there… but it wasn’t.
Never two without three
During World War I, Violet worked for the British Red Cross on the Britannic, a hospital ship and “little brother” to the Titanic and the Olympic. Ironically, the British hit a German mine in the Aegean Sea in 1916 and sank, killing 30 people. Violet still survived, causing three major shipwrecks in her lifetime. He lived until 1971, leaving behind an incredible legend.

While he was on board, the Olympia collided with a battleship and nearly sank, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, and the Britannic struck a submarine mine and sank. Some viewers think so James Cameron He paid his respects to Violet in a very subtle way. In the film, when Thomas Andrews (Victor Garber), the architect of the Titanic, asks the young maid Lucy to wear a life jacket and set an example during the evacuation, some see this as a hidden reference to Violet Jessop.
However, we can point out that the character also appears in the final scene, where Rose, young again, joins Jack, surrounded by the crew who perished in the shipwreck. Therefore, some theories suggest that the character of Lucy is actually inspired by the housekeeper Lucy Snape, a 22-year-old young woman who died in a shipwreck.
Still, Violet Jessop’s story is fascinating and deserves its own feature film. A word to the wise…
