Lula says UN ‘failed to protect victims in Gaza’

The president assessed that the institutions “have stopped functioning”

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, declared that the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral institutions “have stopped functioning” and have failed to protect the victims of the war in the Gaza Strip.

The PT member’s statement was made after a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ahead of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, where the Brazilian leader is expected to meet US President Donald Trump.

“Who can accept the genocide that has been occurring in the Gaza Strip for so long? The multilateral institutions created to prevent these events from happening have stopped working. Today, the UN Security Council and the United Nations itself no longer function,” Lula warned.

Still relating to the Palestinian enclave, Father Gabriel Romanelli, parish priest of the Holy Family of Gaza, stated that the “war is not over” and that the situation in the territory “remains terrible”.

“There is a ceasefire and we hope it lasts, but for now the suffering remains intense. There are still deaths, we cannot cross the border and no humanitarian aid is arriving from Egypt.

Some people managed to go to Jordan, which is certainly a good sign, but the truce is very fragile,” the cleric said.

The Argentine priest concluded by saying that “a lot of food is returning to the market, and prices are dropping a little”, but underlined that the population “does not have the money to pay”.
