Suspects in the Louvre jewel theft arrested near Paris, prosecutor says

The suspects were arrested in connection with the Louvre jewelery theft, just as one of them was about to leave France, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Sunday.

Two men in their 30s from the capital’s Seine-Saint-Denis suburb – which includes some of the country’s poorest areas – were arrested on Saturday night, according to the Le Parisien newspaper, which first reported the information.

They were known to French police and one of the suspects was about to fly to Algeria from Charles de Gaulle airport, the newspaper reported.

There was no indication on Sunday that any of the crown jewels stolen from France had been recovered.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau did not say how many people were arrested or provide further details about them. In a statement, he expressed regret that information about the arrest was released.

“This revelation can only harm the investigative efforts of the approximately 100 detectives employed, both in the search for the stolen jewels and all the criminals. It is too early to provide specific details,” Beccuau said.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, under public pressure to present the findings a week after the robbery, congratulated the investigators in a tweet but provided no further details.

On October 19, four hooded thieves made off with eight precious pieces from the Louvre collection, worth an estimated $102 million, reporting security breaches at the world’s most visited museum.

They broke into the building by using a crane to break an upper floor window during opening hours and fled on a motorbike.

News of the robbery reverberated around the world, prompting France to examine its conscience over what some saw as a national humiliation.
