French public security authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with the jewel theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The arrests took place on Saturday night (25th), a week after the crime recorded last Sunday. The operation was conducted by the Paris Anti-Banditry Brigade (BRB) and the Central Office for the Fight against Trafficking in Cultural Property (OCBC), French police units specialized in fighting organized heritage crime.

The two men are in custody and under investigation “organized theft” AND “criminal conspiracy”. The legislation allows specialized police to carry out interrogations for a maximum period of 96 hours.
The theft occurred in the Apollo Gallery of the Louvre Museum, the sector that houses the royal collection of precious stones and diamonds of the French crown. The criminals managed to steal eight pieces, including historical jewels of the monarchy. The Ministry of Culture said nine items were initially taken away, but one was later found on the street showing damage. The French press identified this recovered piece as the crown of Empress Eugenie, which in its original composition has 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds.
Those responsible for the Louvre robbery used a platform to reach the external facade of the building, where they broke a window. Then, the display cases were broken, allowing the jewelry to be removed. The French Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñezindicated that the robbery lasted approximately four minutes. The minister also recalled that the pieces taken represent a heritage of considerable value.
