Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Monday (27) that he believes it is possible to reach a trade agreement “in the next few days” between Brazil and the United States, to ease the tariffs imposed by American President Donald Trump. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Monday (27) that he believes it is possible to reach a trade agreement “in the next few days” between Brazil and the United States, to ease the tariffs imposed by American President Donald Trump. Washington applies 50% tariffs on Brazilian products.
Lula met Trump this Sunday (26) on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur. “I am convinced that, within a few days, we will find a definitive solution between the United States and Brazil, so that life continues to be beautiful and joyful,” Lula said during a press conference in the Malaysian capital.
“The meeting I had with President Trump was surprisingly positive. If it were just up to the two of us, the agreement would have already been reached,” Lula said on Monday. “Even without promising anything, he assured me that we will reach an agreement,” he underlined. The two presidents have opposing positions on issues such as multilateralism, international trade and the fight against climate change.
Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian products and applied economic sanctions against Judge Alexandre de Moraes and his wife. The US president accuses Moraes of conducting a “witch hunt” following the sentencing, in Brazil, of former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for an attempted coup d’état. Bolsonaro is a friend of Trump.
Trump told reporters on Sunday that he felt “very sad about what happened” to Bolsonaro. “I always thought he was a frank and direct person, but he is going through a difficult time,” he added.
The American president did not comment on Bolsonaro during the conversation with Lula. But the Brazilian president said Monday that the Bolsonaro issue had been resolved after his talks with Trump and that he belongs “to the past of Brazilian politics.”
“With three meetings that you will have with me, you will realize that Bolsonaro was practically nothing. He was, because I don’t speak in a personal tone, I speak in a political tone, in the interest of my country,” Lula said during this Monday’s press conference, adding: “King dead, king set.”
Tensions between Trump and Lula eased after their brief meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September. “We must reach good agreements for our two countries,” Trump assured Lula on Sunday. “We will end up having a great relationship,” he added.
“We are making progress,” said Marcio Rosa, executive secretary of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said he met with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other representatives. “We have agreed to work on drafting a mutually satisfactory agreement in the coming weeks,” he added.
The French press echoes the “reconciliation” between Lula and Trump
After Sunday’s meeting between Lula and Trump, the French press this Monday (27th) speaks of “reconciliation” between Lula and Trump. The newspaper Le Parisien reports that Brazil is moving to reduce tariff tensions with the United States.
The newspaper states that President Lula is optimistic about the possibility of an agreement and, quoting the Brazilian president, predicts that a definitive solution can be found “in the next few days”. Currently, the additional tariffs are up to 50% and significantly harm the Brazilian economy, he writes Le Parisien.
THE Le Monde remember that it was the first meeting between Lula and Donald Trump, which took place after the imposition of tariffs and economic sanctions against the STF minister, Alexandre de Moraes.
Already the The Cross it also mentions the meeting between the two presidents in Kuala Lumpur, but gives more emphasis to the announcement of Lula’s new candidacy for the presidential elections and the holding of COP30 in Belém, which will start on November 10. With a cover story, the newspaper publishes four pages with articles on Brazil to explain “How Lula became the country’s strong man again”.
Birthday and re-election
The Catholic newspaper The Cross begins by recalling that this Monday (27) is the birthday of the Brazilian president, who turns 80, and recalls the main events of Lula’s political career, underlining that the PT deputy has already announced that he will seek re-election.
This will be his seventh run for president. Since the return of democracy to Brazil in 1985, Lula has been excluded from only three elections and, after experiencing a decline in popularity, polls now show that half of Brazilians are satisfied with the president.
At the origin of this turnaround is Donald Trump. Attacking Brazil, accused of promoting a “witch hunt” against former president Jair Bolsonaro, the US president touched on Brazilian nationalism. But the president’s re-election is far from guaranteed, as Brazil remains polarized and the economic environment could be more difficult for Lula in 2026.
Furthermore, a few days before the opening of COP30 in Belém, an oil exploration project in the north of the country reveals the contradictions between the Brazilian president’s desire for development and his environmental speech.
