The last time was in the round of 16 of the competition in 2023. After beating Olímpia 1-0 at Maracanã, the Gávea team lost 3-1 in Assunção, Paraguay, and said goodbye to the competition.
Another of these eliminations is perhaps the most striking for Flamengo fans. In 2008, Rubro-negro won 4-2 away against América do México, but ended up eliminated after losing 3-0 at the Maracanã, with a show by Salvador Cabañas.
The first of these defeats after winning the first match occurred in the last century. In 1991, in the quarter-finals, Flamengo managed to win 2-1 over Boca Juniors at the Maracanã, but won 3-0 at the Bombonera and saw their trajectory in the competition come to an end.
On 13 other occasions, however, Rubro-negro won the first match and confirmed its ranking in the return match. Tonight, the team led by Filipe Luís only needs a draw to reach the Libertadores final.
In case of a 1-0 defeat the match will go to penalties. Now, if they lose with two or more goals difference, Rubro-Negro will say goodbye to the competition.
