Leila interrupts the press conference and praises the ‘greatest coach of Palmeiras’, but Abel still reflects on the renewal

The distance between the ‘oasis’ of the Football Academy and the controversies of life outside the CT worries the coach: ‘Sometimes I ask myself if this is how I want to continue’

The president Leila Pereira interrupted the press conference Abel Ferreira to pay homage to him after Palmeiras’ epic victory over LDU in the Libertadores semi-final. “This man knows what he is doing. He is the greatest coach in the history of Palmeiras. I have always supported him in good times and in difficult times. We will be eternally grateful to him,” the representative said.

Despite the excellent relationship he has with Leila, Abel has not yet signed a new relationship with Palmeiras. His contract expires at the end of 2025, and the skipper still resents being insulted after being eliminated by arch-rivals Corinthians in the Copa do Brasil.

“Leila knows it. I don’t need to sign a contract. She knows what I want. I was very hurt by what I heard from some fans. I can’t continue if there is no way to continue. It’s difficult to be in Brazil because you journalists are demanding, some go beyond that,” began the Portuguese.

“Sometimes I wonder if this is how I want to continue. Palmeiras is an oasis (compared to what happens outside the Football Academy). Everyone knows how much I love it here, but I don’t want to be tied down by a contract. For me the word is enough. But everything will be done at the right time. May it be eternal while it lasts,” he said.

For Abel this “marriage” with Palmeiras is made of “communion, sacrifice and communication between imperfect people”. Despite setbacks, conflicts and victories throughout the year, the club has built an almost flawless season in the Libertadores and will decide on November 29, in Lima-PER, who will be the champion of South America in a duel with Flamengo.
